At the beginning of this course I thought I knew a lot about food science and food. At the end of the semester however, I have learned more than I ever thought was possible about food. Just the amount of chemistry in food has baffled me not to mention the endless amount of food safety issues that I never knew existed. This food science class teaches a lot of information, and yet there is still so much more to know. One of the first things I did as a result of this class was go and buy a meat thermometer. The meat thermometer is now the most used object in my kitchen and I never worry about if the meat I am preparing is done or not. One thing that this class has really done is make me more aware. Dr. Bell seemed like he was always telling us about cross contamination and for good reason; it is how most food borne illnesses are transmitted. Honestly this class really freaked me out during food safety and I did not really want to et much after, but the class taught me how to be safer and the steps to ensure I did not get sick or make any one else sick. The agriculture commodities section was probably one of my favorite parts just because you got to see how much agriculture does for the food system, and how many different ways food is made. Overall this course taught me more about food than I knew there was to learn. Being able to look at some moldy bread and know what is going on and why it happened, or smelling rank chips and knowing why they smell like that is something I have taken from this course. This class was a lot of fun with a lot of fun people and a great professor. Everybody should have to take this class.
